Independent type designer Martha Sue Coursey of That’s Weirdo Stuff has announced a major relaunch of Curiously, an unusual Old Style serif display family available exclusively on Future Fonts. https://www.futurefonts.com/thatsweirdostuff/curiously

Inspired by medieval Roman letterforms, Venetian serifs, and quirky 1970’s children’s books, Curiously blends Old Style serifs with modern type sensibilities. Defined by bone-shaped stems, rounded serifs, a pronounced diagonal axis, and optional dotted counters this typeface is designed primarily to perform as a display. Curiously pairs hand-drawn inky goodness with legibility and no sharp edges. Bonus- it works surprisingly well at small sizes!

Alongside the core letterforms, a library of typographic ornaments with stroke widths that match the font family is included. Designers can construct cohesive logos, borders, patterns, and spot illustrations out of the box. Curiously brings old-world, hand-drawn character to everything from children’s books to boutique packaging.

“Curiously began at Type West as an experiment in bringing illustration into a working typeface,” says designer Martha Sue Coursey. “I’ve always loved how illustrators like Edward Gorey and Tomi Ungerer’s hand lettering matched their illustration. Having the same hand and tool illustrate and letter creates a visual harmony that I wanted to capture in a typeface, if that’s possible. My second release Magik Wanda (also on Future Fonts) is another attempt at this.”

• Typographic Ornaments: Fifty-plus original ornaments with stroke weights matching the type weights (including select variable ornaments).
